4 Days!
Alright everyone, it’s really happening. 4 days and counting. I am getting SO excited!!! Some of you may have heard my big news~ my bag is packed! (Side note: still overweight; working to eliminate something????)
Lots of questions happening... So here it is, Renee's FAQ:
Are you excited?
Heck yeah!! I think I’m going to flip out when they shut the door of my plane in Fort Wayne Tuesday morning. I’m sure that moment will be stamped in my memory for the rest of my life.
Meanwhile, the people around me will be rather annoyed by my carry-on’s overflowing into their seat. To which I will say, “Sorry, I’m going to Africa” and they will look at me like I’m crazy. And I will smile.
Are you nervous?
I’m definitely more excited than nervous. I think I’m most anxious to meet the team I’ll be traveling with~ and praying we will work well together!
What is the weather like?
South Africa is in the southern hemisphere. Their seasons are opposite of ours, so right now they are enjoying SUMMER. I know, hard to imagine right? The weather will be very hot and humid!
What clothes are you packing?
Pants (lightweight!), mid-calf skirts / dresses, solid tees, t-shirts, zip-up hoody & sweater.... That's really the basics of the wardrobe! We will visit the laundry mats every 2 weeks.... so I'm packing for 14 days (with maybe a few repeats). Low maintenance 101, baby.
What country in South Africa?
South Africa is a country.
What will the food be like?
Believe me you’ll hear all about this. Right now, your guess is as good as mine. I thoughtfully bought a bunch of peanut butter crackers for snacks the other day. My mom was less than enthused with my selection. Outside of that, I think I have a granola bar for every Monday.
Where do you sleep?
Outside, loving on the animals.
Geez, just kidding! We will be staying at a game lodge about 120 miles outside of Johannesburg, South Africa. There will be showers, beds, and those amenities. Hopefully, pictures to follow.
What will you be doing?
Reaching kids for Christ in South Africa! Follow along and you’ll get to read the how as we go!
I’m going to blog a couple more times before I leave with more info~ and testing out some pics and videos! I’m the kind of person that will need to figure out her technology sooner than later. (Me in an African internet cafĂ© is already interesting enough.) Thank you for your patience as I learn what a blog is and how to use it. :)

Before we get started...
I remember being a freshman at Purdue sitting across from my mentor, Christine. We were talking about trust, faith, and God. I remember saying, “Christine, my biggest thing in trusting God is that He’ll send me to be a missionary in Africa or something crazy like that. I know that sounds stupid. But seriously. I would be miserable and I never want to do that.” She smiled and laughed, “Renee, God’s not going to send you where you’re going to be miserable. He knows the desires of your heart.” I remember feeling so much better after that conversation. Thank goodness!! I do not want to go to Africa. Animals, no friends, whatever… not for me.
Well, four years later I have to laugh a little bit. I know God doesn’t always work this way, and I don’t mean to scare you or cheese it up with my story... Just giving you a little background. I haven't always thought this was the most exciting thing in the world! God will do crazy things with your heart if you let him.
I’m excited to share with you impressions, experiences, and stories while I’m away (Feb 3-May 13). I don’t know how often I will have internet access, but I will try to send an update at least every other week. I want to give friends an opportunity to share in my experiences, so feel free to check in as frequently as you like. And hey, if you forget, I know two people that won’t miss an entry. Phil and Cheryl (my parents) will be loving the blog and that’s good enough for me. :) I don’t plan on writing formal essays and will probably type just like I talk, so please excuse me if things get a bit casual.
I will write more before I leave about what exactly I'll be doing with Book of Hope, so stay posted!
Thankful for you~
